THE RESPIRATORY THERAPY DEPARTMENT AT VLP

The Respiratory therapy department at Villa Las Palmas has the reputation as being one of the best of any Rehab facility in San Diego County. The RT Dept is located in the sub acute unit at VLP. The main duty of the Respiratory Therapy Department is to manage the ventilators that are on residents in respiratory failure. The goals of the respiratory patients are to wean the resident off the ventilator and also the tracheotomy tube and return them to their prior level of respiratory function.

The Respiratory Therapists (RTs) manage up to 15 state of the art ventilators in the sub acute unit. They also take care of all tracheotomy residents out on the main floor both west and east wing that are on continuous cool aerosols. RTs are often called on to help nursing to assess residents with any respiratory problems. They are invaluable in 911-code blue or any emergency situation.
.
The RTs also work with all the rehab therapies like Speech Therapy to enable tracheotomy residents to eat and speak. The RTs also assist nursing in administering aerosol treatments to the residents that are at the facility that have any respiratory diseases.

The dept is comprised of 15 Respiatory Therapists. There are RTs around the clock at VLP. The RT Director is Michael Torbett who has been an RT for over 30 years. Most of his staff has well over 10 years experience. The dept has a very good ventilator weaning rate over the years and numerous residents have gone home after being weaned from the ventilator and their tracheotomy tubes.

VLP is also being used by California College San Diego as a training facility for its RT student’s clinical rotations.

Over 65 graduates were celebrated at the semi-annual “Rehab Reunion” this past September. The award ceremony was opened by Jeffrey Marxen, M.D., Orthopaedic Surgeon who told graduates, patients and their families just how important a top notch rehab program is in the successful treatment of patients.

Doctors in attendance were John Gaidry, Larry Marshall, Kumara Prathipati, Neel Ramineni and Jeffrey Marxen. The doctors remarked how therapeutic this event was for not only the graduates but for the current patients as well.

The entire staff of Villa Las Palmas Healthcare Center is looking forward to the next Rehab Reunion in mid 2008.
